17 Hours of Kona Zwift

Zwift did this event last year too because of Covid. This event features 17 different triathletes who will lead a group ride each hour for 17 hours of the day. There will then be a 9 hour run portion where triathletes will lead a group run. The reason why it is 17 hours of Kona is because 17 hours is the cut off for the race. This event takes place on the 8th of October until the 10th. Kona is the full distance IronMan World Championships, it is very well known among triathletes, and a huge achievement to participate in the event. For a complete schedule of the events, and who is riding when, head over to this article: https://www.zwift.com/events/series/17-hours-of-kona-2021.

Zwift Absa Cape Epic 2021

Zwift has just announced that there will be an Absa Cape Epic event again. This is a yearly event that is mainly on gravel, but there is some road. There will be 8 different parts of the series that take place from October 4th – October 17th. This event helps raise money to donate to help kids get to school, participate in sports, and have better job opportunities. For each of the 8 parts there will be a Zwift Power up podcast featuring cyclists such as Victor Campenaerts, Doug Ryder, Kevin Vermaak (Founder of the Absa Cape Epic), Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, Nic Dlamini. Some of the events will be on mountain bikes. and others will be on Qhubeka Buffalo bikes. The unlock on this ride is the latest Absa Cape Epic kit, all you have to do is complete any of the events. Cape Epic, the people behind this event, have also put together a promo video. The stages are relatively short, around 5-12 miles without lead in, the max of 16 miles with lead in I believe. It is not a race, it is a ride at your own pace, it will likely be a pretty big event, so there will probably be groups spread out throughout the course.

How to create a Meetup on Zwift

Many cycling clubs also train/ride on Zwift. Since Zwift has not fully rolled out their clubs feature, cycling teams and clubs have to use the meetups feature to create a group ride/race. The meetup function is great for smaller group rides, but is not ideal for races. Here is a step by step tutorial on how you can create a meetup.

First, be sure that you have the Zwift companion app installed, also be sure that all of the riders are following you. In order to invite riders they must be following you. To get started creating a meetup, just click the events tab, meetups tab, and hit create meetup. It is that simple!

Once you hit create meetup, you will have all sorts of different setting that you can change, the time, date, world, route, distance/duration, meetup settings, and a meetup message. To change the setting around just tap the setting you want to change and you will be able to scroll or click a different option. Every world and route is open except for event only routes/worlds. You can also switch so that you are creating a run meetup, which has the same settings.

The last thing that you will need to do is select who you want to invite. You can invite up to 100 riders other than yourself. You can only choose from the riders that are following you. Then, hit create meetup! Up until 5 minutes before the event starts, you can edit the details.

In order to have the most riders possible, contact the riders and let them know that the ride is happening so that they know to check their companion app. Riders/runners will get a notification telling them that they have been invited to a meetup. You can also comment on their activities or use other forms of communication to let them know that you want to ride! Thanks for reading and ride on!

ABOUT THE SERIES

All about Zwift Academy Tri 2021

Zwift academy Tri is back! This and Zwift academy Road are my favorite events that Zwift hosts. The reason why I like this event series is because it is very motivating and fun to participate in. This year I am especially motivated because there will be an exclusive helmet unlock at the end of the academy that I really want. Let’s dive into the details. This year there will not be a seperate academy for men and women, just like all of the other academies this year. They will qualify for seperate teams, the 6 winners(3 males & 3 females) will get a spot on the Zwift Academy Tri team which will compete at the Iron-man World Championships in Kona in 2022. The final selection will be made in March of 2022. The event begins on the 18th of October and ends on the 13th of December.

Zwift will use the baseline runs and rides and finish line runs and rides to determine who makes it onto the team. Baseline runs and Finishline runs and rides have various distances, here are the distances: 20 km/40 km TT for bike and 5 km/10 km for run. You will need to complete 4 events of the Baseline/finishline rides. 1 of each for each sport, so 4 in total. There will also be 10 workouts that you will have to complete, either with a group or solo, as long as it is the Zwift Academy Tri 2021 workouts, then it will count towards the event. The workouts will be added in game in the coming few days when Zwift releases V.1.16. There will be short and workouts, some are meant to build speed and some are meant to build endurance. The long workouts are 40-60 minutes long and the short are 25-35 minutes long.

For more information about how you can score a pro contract, head over to this Zwift support article: https://support.zwift.com/zwift-academy-tri-faqs-SJ51WwulK. Zwift academy Tri has the most unlocks, only because you have to do the most work to get it 😉. After you complete bike workouts 2 and 5 in addition to run workouts 2 and 5 will award you special Zwift Academy unlocks. The unlocks consist of a Backwards Cap, socks, A ZA Tri run kit, A ZA Tri cycling kit, and a exclusive TT helmet when you finish all of the required workouts and events.

Zwift has also updated their UI for the Zwift Academies so that it will display your progress in the academies, your Baseline test vs Finish line test to measure how much you have improved through the academy, a link where you can find FAQ, events, and more! I assume Zwift will also add a Zwift academy event filter once Off the MAAP is finished. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like.

All about Zwift Academy Run 2021

Zwift academy Run is back for the second year in a row. Last year was the first year that we saw Zwift host an event for runners. The Zwift academy run is pretty much the same, just like the Zwift academy Road, there will not be a seperate event for Women and Men. There will however be seperate categories. The series begins on the 4th of October and ends on the 29th of November. The team selection will take place in late 2021(Date TBD). I am not much of a runner so I probably will not be participating in this event, I will however try and complete the Zwift academy Tri, the helmet is pretty cool looking!

Runners will be competing to get onto the Zwift running team which competes at major marathons. Anyone over the age of 18 can get onto the team. For more information on the pro contracts head over to Zwift’s requirements page: https://www.zwift.com/academy/zarun/run-pro-contender-requirements. Zwift will use the baseline runs and finish line runs to determine who makes it onto the team. Baseline runs and Finishline runs are very similar to 5k tests. There will also be 8 workouts that you will have to complete, either with a group or solo, as long as it is the Zwift Academy Run 2021 workouts, then it will count towards the event. The workouts will be added in game in the coming few days when Zwift releases V.1.16.

The unlocks consist of the Zwift Academy Run 2021 hat, socks, shoes, running shirt and shorts. You will receive one of the four unlocks at these milestones(I am not sure which ones come first and which come last), 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% through the academy.

All about Zwift Academy Road 2021

More details on Zwift academy have just been released. Here is an overview of the event. I am not going to give every little detail, just the basics. One major thing that is new this year is that Zwift Academy Men and Women will be combined. There will be women only categories and open categories. They will receive the same unlocks but will be competing for different pro contracts. Today Zwift released details for all three event series and they all feature different unlocks. Articles for each will be released shortly. Zwift Academy road begins on the 30th of August and ends on the 25th of October. Zwift academy finalists will be announced on the 12th of November. To compete in the event you must register before September 26th. Zwift makes sure to give plenty of time for those who are not super serious about the event(I am just here for the sweet unlocks 😏).

Zwift has also added a few new events that you have to complete in order to receive all of the unlocks. The requirements for getting the unlocks are very simple, complete at least 75% of each of the 6 workouts, complete four events, two recovery rides, one baseline ride, and one finish line ride.

The riders that are shooting for a pro contract with either Canyon/Sram or Alpecin Fenix will have to do these additional things:

  • The longer and harder distance of the Baseline and Finish Line rides
  • A pro Contender TT, which is a scheduled race event on the Zwift calendar
  • Pro Contender Workout that that is also in the new Zwift Academy Workout folder that will be added in update 1.16. Check back soon for more on that update…

As usual, Zwift recommends that you take an FTP test(Any of the four offered on the Zwift workotus folder, to ensure that you have the most accurate and effective results from the academy. If the workout is too hard or too easy, you can always increase the Bias, which is displayed under the list of things upcoming on a workout when in workout mode.

An update went out earlier today for the Zwift academy app that likely gave the app the ability to display all that cool stuff(8/17/21).Here is a screenshot of what it looks like.

There will be four rewards in the Zwift academy road event, the unlocks consist of a cap, a pair of socks, a kit, and bike paint job for the Canyon Aeroad 2021.

20% – Cap

50% – Socks

70% – Kit

100% – Paint Job

There will be orientational rides where you can learn more about ZA road, these don’t count towards the unlocks. They have also added two new rides, Baseline Rides and Finish Line rides. These are to help determine how much you have improved over the time in the academy. You should do the Baseline ride first, and the Finish line ride last to make sure your results are accurate. It is almost like an FTP test but testing you on segments. There will be short segments, mid distance segments, and long segments to help determine what kind of rider you are. There is no drafting on these rides. Note: It is required to do the advanced version of these rides in order to have a chance at a pro contract. You do not have to do the group workouts in a group ride, you can do them whenever you want while Zwift academy lasts and it will count.

Thanks for reading and I highly recommend this event series. For FAQ head over to the forums post: https://forums.zwift.com/t/zwift-academy-road-2021-faq/554234.
