YouTube Video: Zwift Race Analysis

Today I did yet another Zwift race, one right before school, and one right after. The first race went pretty well, I did some tweaking with my live stream settings to make the quality a bit better. I recorded the second race and made a Zwift race analysis out of it. It made for a pretty good analysis because I was caught behind a burrito in the finishing sprint.

YouTube Video: HERD Winter Racing Series

Most of the HERD Winter Racing Series race. Got dropped a few times but managed to catch back up to the lead group. Had nothing left to sprint at the end but still got 7th which was really good considering I was racing against some very strong riders. Got a Zwift Power gain of 11 points, which is the most I have gotten in awhile(also my first time with a ranking under 200!). Watch the full race here:

Zwift Medio Fondo 2022 // YouTube Video

Today I joined the Zfondo Medio fondo distance. The Zfondo ride was on the 2022 Medio fondo route, which goes through Titans grove, the Epic KOM, Epic KOM bypass, KOM, and Tempus Fugit 2x. All of this added up to the 50 mile route with 3000+ ft of climbing.

I started out in the second group, then made the bridge to the front group because there was much better draft and the pace was only slightly quicker. Then I had to plug in my computer, which led to me getting dropped. I settled with the second group and sat in until we hit the Epic KOM bypass. On the bypass I pushed the pace and tried to bridge, I caught a few riders, including Eric from Zwift Insider! We formed a small group that lasted to the end of the ride. As we went through the KOMs and sprints, some riders dropped but most of them eventually made it back on once a group of around 20-30 riders caught us as we headed to the finish. I went for two of the sprints, coming very close on the first one(losing to around 0.3 seconds to Eric). I also went for the Fuego Flats segment but missed the jersey by around 2 seconds. I didn’t have a power up and there wasn’t much draft so I was pretty happy with my time. When we hit the Epic KOM I was very surprised by the pace, I quickly gained a lead of over 10 seconds, which soon turned into over a minute. I held a steady Z3-Z4 on the climb, and set a PR of 24 minutes.

Overall I was very happy with this ride, I completed the route in around 2 hours 11 min. I was very surprised with my Epic KOM time despite being tired from the previous 40 miles.

Here is a video of the final climb, the Epic KOM.

Sub 50 Min Alpe // Tour4kids Stage 4

For the past few days I have been taking it easy in order to be nice and fresh for Stage 4 of Tour4kids. My goal going into this stage was to do the Alpe in under 50 minutes. My fromer PR was 57 minutes, so I would need to shave off around 8 or so minutes. Around 10 riders showed up to the race and we stuck together for the first bit before getting to the Alpe. Originally I planned to pace myself at around 4.3-4.5 wpk, instead, I stuck with the lead group for as long as I could. I held on for around 20 minutes, by the time I dropped there were only 3 riders remaining in the lead group. Most of my graph was yellow and red, which meant that I would probably set a new FTP!

After I dropped, Peter Mitchell, a very strong rider who was around 1:30 back began to bridge the gap. I tried to hold steady around 140-150 watts, hoping that I would still accomplish my goal. On the final turn, Peter was only 20 seconds back. I managed to hold him off, settling for 4th place. This was by far the hardest ride I have done. It was pretty much an FTP test, but you have to keep going after. I finished with a time of 46:22, 11 minutes faster than my previous PR. I also set a new FTP of 155, 4.6 wpk.

For the Win!!! // Zwift Race Report

Today I did the Rhino Crash Chase Race, which usually has a pretty competitive field for the C riders and I was looking for a Zwift Power gain. There were around 6-7 high ranked riders, and if I got top 5, I would get a Zwift Power score decrease. Since it’s a chase race, the categories have different start times. The C group only had 2 minutes on the B’s, who were caught by A. The A group basically had a full on DS(team car) who was coaching them through the course, telling them when to attack and how they can drop the C and B riders who had joined their group. The C’s did an amazing job working together, but it was not enough to hold off the A’s and B’s. The A’s caught us with around 8 miles to go, and from there on, my strategy was to just pay attention to the chat, and anticipate the attacks that the A riders would be doing. A C rider with a 15 second power of over 13 wpk was still in the group, not good for me since my sprint was not the best. The group of C’s that had caught onto the A’s went from around 15 riders, to 3. In the finishing sprint I had an Aero boost, the best power up in the game. I turned the Aero on early in order to catch the draft on the A’s wheels. The other C riders at that point didn’t really have anything left in the tank. Getting caught benefited me because I have a high wpk, and a pretty bad sprint.

In the end, I had a Zwift Power score of 258 for the race. I got a gain of 6.22 points. This was by far one of the best races I’ve had, since the few C races that I have won have been against a small or not very competitive field.

Poor Sprint Timing // Zwift Race Report

Today, before getting the Covid booster, I joined a highly competitive B category race. The best rider signed ups rank was in the low 100’s, which is better than most A category riders! Going into the race, I was pretty sure I would get a gain on Zwift Power. The race was three laps of Sprinters Playground in Neokyo, and had no power ups.

Lap 1

The start of the race was not too hard, and the race was surprisingly slow and calm. On the first incline, I followed an attack with around 10 riders, we were caught almost instantly. The rest of the lap was calm, and the group was still around 60 riders.

Lap 2

The second lap had points for FTS and FAL, and the sprint was right after the incline. About a minute before the incline, I had to blow my nose, and nearly lost of the group. I was able to rejoin the group right before we hit the inclines, not ideal, but there was nothing I could do about it at that point. The group, as expected, surged on the incline, but then settled down slightly. I started sprinting slightly before the sprint started to see if I could grab onto the stronger riders wheels. I held on for the most part, but my sprint quickly faded as I had forgotten how long of a sprint it was. I came 19th for the sprint time wise, and around 20th place wise. The group slightly behind me flew by and I wasn’t able to grab on, my HR was very near my max. I grabbed onto some other riders wheels who were also off the back. I barely caught the group in time for the decent.

Final lap

My main focus was to finish the lap with the front group, and bring my HR down for the final sprint. I dangled off the back of the group for around half of the lap, then moved up before the final incline. I expected there to be a ton of attacks on the incline, but surprisingly, no one attacked. There were a few here and there, but no one chased. The race blew up on the flats when a few riders attacked, the group was coming into the arcade very fast, and for some reason, I always get dropped in the arcade. I started my sprint just after we left the arcade, but I couldn’t get up to speed in time.

Results

Zwift Power results

I got 29th on the regular Zwift results, and 30th on Zwift Power after the points were added up, meaning all of the riders who raced ahead of me were on Zwift Power.

Takeaways

Knowing the strong B cat riders, they have insanely strong sprints. I think something I will be doing more often is starting my sprint earlier, and I can just catch onto the draft of the first few riders and still come in at a decent place. Overall this was a fun and hard race, and I am happy with my result. Although it is disappointing that I didn’t get a gain, I had fun and placed well against a strong field of riders.
